Why do we Believe the Lie

0

Lies are one of the main tools that Satan uses against Christians and non-Christians alike. Let us not forget that Satan is real, and his intent is real. He wants to “devour us.” (1 Peter 5:8)

No weapon in Satan’s arsenal is more harmful than the lie. Satan devours with lies. (Genesis 3:13) God hates lies (Proverbs 6:17, 19) John says there is “no truth” in Satan and that he is the “father of lies.” (John 8:44) So if we know the danger about telling a lie and believing one; why do we have such a difficult time discerning the truth from a lie?

One of life’s most important truths is that we are made to be recipients of God’s grace and glory. (Psalm 107:8-9) The Apostle Paul further expounds on this idea of us being “vessels for good…set apart as holy…” (2 Timothy 2:20-22)  So if God created man in such a manner as to be vessels “ready for every good work” then without God, there is surely a vacuum that will be filled with something other than God.

There are two basic principles that liars use to deceive the naive. The first is an age old saying, “if you continue to say something enough times eventually people will believe it”. One such lie that I heard over and over through out my life was “it doesn’t matter what church you go to, or how you worship.”  When I was younger I believed that lie because I had heard it so much. I even started to believe that you did not need to worship anywhere. Possibly the most dangerous practice used by liars is the idea of making a lie big enough that everyone will believe it.

Many examples from political history prove this to be true.

The Apostle Paul leaves us with great instructions in fighting evil. We must put on the whole armor of God that we may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. (Ephesians 6:10-18) So if we are as God creations, designed to be filled with his grace and love, there surely will be that vacuum waiting to be filled with God; If not God, some kind of lie about God’s true nature. Since we are all sinners and fallen from grace, we should all be careful to examine what we believe.
